Harper's Legacy

There is no shortage of magazine articles ( most recently National Geographic ) and documentaries on the Alberta's dirty secret. Once Alberta was the prettiest province in all of Canada. A scenic panorama of majestic mountains and pristine forest. The far right government has forsaken the land for the all mighty buck. By 2015, Canadian oil production is forecast to reach almost 4 million barrels a day. Two thirds of it will come from the oil sands. Even now, Canada is the only non-OPEC country with growing oil deliver ability. Over two thousand six hundred million barrels a day from Alberta alone. Trouble with this is it takes 4 barrels of water to get 1 barrel of oil.
Nowhere on Earth is more earth being moved these days than in the Athabasca Valley. To extract each barrel of oil from a surface mine, the industry must first cut down the forest, then remove an average of two tons of peat and dirt that lie above the oil sands layer, then two tons of the sand itself. It must heat several barrels of water to strip the bitumen from the sand and upgrade it, and afterward it discharges contaminated water into tailing ponds like the one near Mildred Lake. It is now reported the even the new tailing ponds are leaking into the river and surrounding land. First Nation settlements downstream from the ponds are reporting higher than normal incidents of cancer. They now cover around 50 square miles. Last April some 500 migrating ducks mistook one of those ponds, at a newer Syn crude mine north of Fort McKay, for a hospitable stopover, landed on its oily surface, and died. The incident stirred international attention—Greenpeace broke into the Syn-crude facility and hoisted a banner of a skull over the pipe discharging into the tailing pond along with a sign that read "World's Dirtiest Oil: Stop the Tar Sands."

David Suzuki: Tar sand wealth comes with environmental costs .

The scale of the Alberta tar sands project is unprecedented in Canadian history. Alberta’s “blue-eyed sheiks”, as the oil-industry elite are known, stand to make billions of dollars from carving up northern Alberta in order to meet U.S. demand for oil. But these dollars pale in comparison to the environmental value that is being squandered at the expense of petrodollars.

With the election of President Obama and his ethical stance on the environment, Harper can no longer proclaim as he did to the Bush Administration it's either dirty Canadian oil or Middle East blood oil, take your pick.

Further Update:
OTTAWA — Federal politicians from the government and opposition benches have mysteriously cancelled an 18-month investigation into oilsands pollution in water and opted to destroy draft copies of their final report, Canwest News Service has learned.
The aborted investigation comes as new questions are being raised about the Harper government's decision to exempt a primary toxic pollutant found in oilsands tailings ponds from a regulatory agenda.
The government is in the process of categorizing industry-produced substances that could either be toxic or harmful, but has excluded naphthenic acid — a toxin from oilsands operations — from the list, and left it off another list of substances that companies are required to track and report.
The exclusion is "alarming" according to a letter sent Tuesday to Environment Minister Jim Prentice and Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq, since the federal and Alberta governments have already identified it as a primary source of pollution in liquid waste dumped into ponds after companies extract oil from the region.
"Naphthenic acids are one of the main pollutants responsible for the toxicity of tarsands tailings to aquatic organisms, and have been shown to harm liver, heart and brain function in mammals," wrote Matt Price, the policy director at Environmental Defence, an independent research organization based in Toronto. "Naphthenic acids are also very long-lived, taking decades to break down."
Price also said in the letter that the federal and provincial governments are already allowing some of the toxins to leak into groundwater and surface water.
"It is therefore urgent that all tailings pollutants, and naphthenic acid in particular, be properly assessed and managed to minimize the risk to human and environmental health," he wrote.
Environment Canada said that a variety of acids from the oilsands are on a medium priorities list of its chemical-management plan, but have not yet been assessed. A spokeswoman explained in an e-mail that the government would also consider adding naphthenic acids to a list of substances that companies would be required to report following further study.
The petroleum sector is the only industry with its own stream of substances to be evaluated under the government's plan.
Meantime, Price added that the United States had moved forward with specific reporting requirements for the substance, urging the Harper government to follow suit, especially following the cancelled investigation in Parliament.
"The recent decision of the federal environment committee to abandon its work on a report regarding water and the oilsands industry heightens the need for the federal government to properly deal with oilsands pollution, or risk further undermining public trust in responsible oversight of the industry," Price wrote.
The MPs made the decision to terminate their investigation and destroy copies of their report in a meeting behind closed doors on June 17, and they have all declined to provide details on what happened apart from explaining that they failed to reach a consensus.
Liberal MP Francis Scarpaleggia, who spearheaded the parliamentary investigation on water pollution from the oilsands, blamed the government for dragging its feet on regulating the industry. He said he was working on his own report based on evidence and testimony gathered during parliamentary hearings.
"I . . . have no intention of letting go this subject that should be part and parcel of the true national water strategy Canadians demand and deserve," Scarpaleggia said. "The Conservative government has a lot of answering to do for its persistent lack of leadership on water in general and on oilsands and water in particular. The Conservative government's record on water and oilsands has been one of constant denial and foot-dragging."
Conservative MP James Bezan, who chairs the House of Commons environment committee, said he was disappointed that MPs were unable to agree on the final report, but believes the investigation has still brought important information into the public domain through the hearings and testimony from expert witnesses that have resulted in several independent reports and commentary.
"Over the next few weeks, I expect that you'll see the opposition parties and the government responding with their own considerations and recommendations on what we heard," Bezan said.
Environment Minister Jim Prentice has also recently announced that his department was investing $1.6 million in new technology to identify chemical fingerprints of toxins in the water to determine whether they are originating from specific oilsands operations.
And NDP environment critic Linda Duncan confirmed that she plans to produce her own report based on the committee's investigation. But she noted that some of the delays were caused by the government's decision to shut down Parliament at the end of last year.
"I'm very, very upset that it's dragged on this long," said Duncan. "It's absolutely shameful that the federal government is sitting on its hands."
In its investigation, MPs on the committee also travelled to hear from witnesses in Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray in Alberta, but figures on their budget were not immediately available.

Some Tea Baggers Are Domestic Terrorists

The mood of right-wing Americans has turned hysterical, ugly and violent, with the help of fearmongering TV and radio pundits and Republican lawmakers. And Sarah Palin, the half-term Governor of Alaska, Fox News contributor and soon to be reality TV star,  has decided she won’t be left out of the right-wing armed and dangerous crowd, using violent infused rhetoric and apocalyptic falsehoods. On Twitter, Palin tweeted an inflammatory call to action for her followers to “reload” in their battle against Democrats and health care reform. Her tweets led her followers to her Face book page, which contained an image of a map of the U.S., showing bullseye crosshairs on the state districts of targeted Democratic lawmakers who voted for the bill. She then urges her followers to contribute cash to her SarahPac, in a first “salvo” in the battle to defeat Democrats.

Republican lawmakers were whipping groups of confused and angry teapartiers into frenzied mobs, with falsehoods and inflammatory speech. Even while the House was in session, some Republican lawmakers were seen on the Capitol building balcony waving “kill the bill” signs to the chanting tea party protesters in the streets below, after the day before, teapartiers abused, spat and hurled racial and bigoted slurs towards Democratic lawmakers.

Republican Representatives Steve King (R-IA), Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) and Louie Gohmert (R-TX), you remember Louie Gohmert the Terror Baby Conspiracy Advocate, were all busy whipping the tea baggers into a wild frenzy.
If this didn't get you attention, the Fox New$ Channels would parade all their crazy friends and their crazy rhetoric to incite the "believers" even more.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords calls on Sarah Palin to remove Cross hairs Ads.

Sheriff Clarence Dupnik

Addressing the tragedy at a news conference, the sheriff said that law enforcement had reason to believe that Giffords was specifically targeted in the attack. He added that evidence suggests one suspect -- 22-year-old Jared Loughner, who is already in custody -- likely did not act alone.
"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," said the sheriff. "And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
When asked by a reporter if Giffords being shot could have been motivated by "prejudice and bigotry," Dupnik responded, "All I can tell you is that there's reason to believe that this individual may have a mental issue. And I think that people who are unbalanced are especially susceptible to vitriol.

One thing is abundantly clear, in the United States the Political Parties, the news Media and Pundits & Lobbyists must be very careful whom they pander to and incite. Mentally ill individuals take their words as gospel and believe it is their duties to correct the wrongs these people are ranting about. Why did Sarah Palin refused to take the cross hairs on these Democratic politicians when she was warned that trouble could ensue.Whatever her reasons were she hold some of the responsibility for what has happened.
This morning Gabrielle Gifford who was shot point blank through the brain remains in critical condition and in a medical induced coma. Her family has remained with her through out the night.
Innocent 9 years old  Christina Green was also gunned down and died. Four other victims remain in critical condition, five victims remain in serious condition. Dorothy Morris 76, Dorwin Shoddard 76, Phyllis Schneck 79 were listed among the fatalities.

This is Harper's War Now

Canadian soldiers, "training behind the wire," will continue to die in combat. So-called combat "trainers" frequently find themselves in live and death battles. If Canadians support the training mission, as it, it's because they do not understand what a military training mission entails.

Until now, Harper has insisted that Canadians will withdraw by July 2011. But NATO countries have been lobbying for months to persuade Harper to change his mind. Very suddenly Harper did an about face. The country must ask was Harper trying to restore his tarnished reputation at the expense of our Military? The conservatives of Canada had been rebuked by the world community just weeks before. Harper had suffered an humiliating defeat at the United Nations. The loss of a seat at the Security Council had been a blow to Harper's Government and his blaming Opposition Leader Michael Ignatieff wasn't getting much traction here at home.

Colin Kenny, once an adviser to the Right Hon. Pierre Elliott Trudeau, and now a Liberal Senator who specializes in defense matters noted the following:

When we talk about making tough foreign affairs decisions, we are talking about defending and advancing the interests of all Canadians. Anyone who thinks that having a president in Washington convinced that you have betrayed him when he needed you the most is not coming to grips with Canada's interests…. It has been reported that Stephen Harper gulped at the press conference in South Korea before answering a question as to whether he had changed his position on remaining in Afghanistan after 2011. I would have gulped too. There is no easy way out of this one.

Harper had a way out:
As prime minister in a minority government, he cannot commit Canada absolutely to any course of action. He must take it before Parliament for a debate. Was Harper not savvy enough to know this presented a way out for him, or was his "thirst" to be the only "decider" guiding him. Remember his words: "I make the rules"

In May 2007 Harper told the Parliament the following (this is a quote)

“Mr. Speaker, as members of the House know, we made a pledge during the last election campaign to put international treaties and military engagements to a vote in this chamber.

Guess Mr. Harper just changed the rules!

In a recent poll 62% of Canadians vote NO on extending the Mission
38% of Canadians vote YES to extending the Mission

All Afghanistan is a Battle Field

There will be pressure for Canada to lift its non-combat caveats, especially if the war worsens over the coming years."  Harper has already gambled the safety of  Canadian troops once and probably will not hesitate to do it once again

- The Bloc Quebecois will introduce a motion this week in Parliament to force a vote on the future of Canada's mission in Afghanistan, according to party leader Gilles Duceppe. It will be supported by the Liberals and the NDP Parties.
